2007年河南省高级中学学校招生考试英语试卷(非实验区)阅读理解 A
A 10-year-old boy, who lost his left arm in a car accident, decided to study judo.
The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. He was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
“Master,” the boy finally said. “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you need to know,” the master answered.
Not quite understanding but believing in his master, he kept training. Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament(巡回赛). Surprisingly, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time his opponent(对手) became impatient and the boy won using his one move. Still, not knowing why, the boy was now in the last match.
This time, his opponent was bigger and stronger. For a while, the boy seemed to be failing. Afraid that the boy might get hurt, the referee(裁判) called a time-out. He wanted to stop the match.
“No,” the master said. “Let him continue.” Soon after the match went on, his opponent made a terrible mistake. Without thinking, the boy used his move and won the match.
On the way home, the boy asked his master why he was able to win the tournament with only one move. “You won for two reason.” His master answered. “First, you've learend one of the key(关键的) moves in all of judo. Second, the only known defense(防守) for that move is for your opponent to hold your left arm.”
