  Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

  Tuesday, March 27th

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

  Friday, March 30th

Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life -- no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say "hello". Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back next year.

《英语周报·初三同步辅导版》第26期第3

Dear Mary,

Have you ever been to Bangkok? Its the capital city of Thailand, a country in Southeast Asia. Were staying here for a few days before we go to the island of Phuket. Some of our friends went to Phuket last year. They say we should go there because there are beautiful beaches and it is very relaxing. Ill take many photos and show them to you.

Bangkok is a very interesting city to visit. Yesterday we went to the old part of the city to look at the buildings there. Its also very crowded and busy. There are lots of people and traffic. This morning we went shopping. Bangkok is a wonderful place to shop for jewellery and clothes. We bought some gold bracelets(手镯) and necklaces this morning. Before we leave here, we are going to buy some clothing.

Thailand is also called the Land of Smiles because the people are very friendly. And its true! The people are really nice and they are always smiling.

The food in Bangkok is delicious. I like Thai food, but it is sometimes a little spicy(辛辣的) for me. You can also get Chinese food here because many people in Bangkok came originally(最初) from China. The Chinese food is very good, and it isnt as spicy as Thai food. You can get European and American food here, too. Yesterday I saw an American restaurant. I like American food but I dont want to eat American food in Thailand. Id rather eat Thai or Chinese food here. I like to try new things when I travel.

The weather has been very hot. Yesterday it rained and got a little cooler, but today its very hot again.

When the cub leaves the pocket, he has lots of fur. And he is about as big as your shoe. He climbs to his mothers back. He rides there while she teaches him to find food.

I want to study, Ma wrote in her diary. Why can boys study but girls cant? It would be wonderful if I could stay at school forever.

Ma loves school so much because she wants to have a better life.

My parents work hard in the fields but they are still poor. They have no knowledge. Most girls in my village leave school early and get married young. I dont want that kind of life, Ma said.

After her story became known, many French students sent money to her. Mas dream is the same as ever. She hopes to go to Tsinghua University and become a reporter. Then, I can find poor kids like me, and help them, she said.
